A SINGER TALENT DISCOVERED WITH THE MAGIC OF DEEP OF FOLK
The very first notes of the concert caught attention the ear. A soft clarinet combined with a transparent guitar makes for an original sound experience.
This time there was no need to make an effort to hear through the background noise, since the Poppari was almost empty as the band started.
Even in the music city Jyväskylä it is hard to find audience during the Christmas season, and even a special foreign delight couldn’t pull enough buffs this time.
The musicians of the international band are the Turkish percussion player Ulas Aksunger, the Dutch saxophonist Iman Spaargaren; the Finnish members are singer Johanna Sulkunen, guitar player Santeri Sulkunen and bass player originally from Jyväskylä, Tapani Toivanen.
The end of the concert was disturbed by, instead of emptiness, happy and loud male crowd. Until that Muistot Orchestra had anyhow already convinced the listener with their original style that is a mixture of jazz, pop and deep folk. A hypnotic floating sound base was created by electric bass and guitar. At the beginnings of the songs,
Toivanen and Sulkunen were contending with who plays less and still they started the machine to roll on. Santeri Sulkunen also played elegant guitar solos through the whole night, very peaceful and well developed. The sound was clean and clear but still soft.
Aksunger took care of the variation, there was always liveliness under the minimalism. Instead of normal drum set he was using only snare drum and cymbals, but the djembe and cajon were more important. Most of the rhythms were created with bare hands. Spaargaren got a nice space for soloing for saxophone and clarinet and the rest of the time he was supporting the singer. The group liked to start with minimal themes and grew the intensity slowly. The minimalist approach is suiting their style very well, since the singer has such a wonderful voice. The sound of
Johanna Sulkunen is deep and full of variety. She has found her own peaceful and confident style, that reaches the listener fully also in Poppari.

Heti alku pani höristämään korviaan: vaimea klarinetti ja kuulas sähkökitara on jokseenkin omintakeinen yhdistelmä. Baariyleisön metelöinnin takia ei nyt tarvinnut pinnistellä, sillä Muistot Orchestran aloittaessa Poppari oli lähes tyhjä.
Pikkujoulusesongin aikaan musiikkikaupunki Jyväskylässäkään ei riitä yleisöä joka paikkaan, eikä edes harvinainen ulkomainen herkku nyt houkutellut.
Monikansallisen yhtyeen lyömäsoittaja Ulas Aksunger tulee Turkista, saksofonisti Iman Spargaren Hollannista. Suomalaisia muusikoita ovat laulaja Johanna Sulkunen, kitaristi Santeri Sulkunen ja Jyväskylästä lähtöisin oleva basisti Tapani Toivanen.
Konsertin lopussa kärsittiin autiuden sijasta muista ongelmista kun tusinan herrasmiehen iloinen seurue oli jyrätä bändin alleen. Siihen mennessä Muistot Orchestra oli kuitenkin ehtinyt vakuuttaa ja valloittaa omaperäisellä poppia, jazzia ja syvää folkkia yhdistelevällä tyylillään.
Musiikin hypnoottisesti kelluvat pohjat luotiin sähköisten soittimien, kitaran ja basson voimin. Kappaleiden aloituksissa Toivanen ja Sulkunen saattoivat kilpailla siitä kumpi soittaa vähemmän, ja silti kone alkoi vääjäämättä kulkea. Santeri Sulkunen soitteli myös tyylikkäitä kitarasooloja koko illan, sellaisia rauhallisia ja hyvin kehiteltyjä.
Soundi oli puhdas, kirkas ja silti pehmeä.
Aksunger piti huolen varioinnista, siitä että minimalismin alla oli sittenkin aina eloa. Normaalista rumpusetistä hän käytti vain virveliä ja peltejä, mutta käsirumpu ja cajon-laatikko olivat tärkeämpiä. Samalla suurin osa rytmityksistä syntyi paljain käsin. Spargaren puolestaan sai maltillisesti soolotilaa sekä saksofonille että klarinetille, ja tuki muutoin hillitysti laulajaa.
Yhtye aloitti mielellään vähäisistä aiheista ja kasvatti jännitettä hiljalleen. Pienesti tekeminen sopii pirtaan oikein hyvin, kun laulajalla on näin upea ääni. Johanna Sulkusen soundi on syvä ja sävykäs, on löytynyt oma rauhallisen itsevarma tyyli, jolla sanoma välittyi Popparissakin täysimääräisenä.
The music of the Muistot Orchestra is an exiting mixture of modern jazz and pop flavoured with musical influences from Scandinavia, Turkey and the Netherlands. The multi-musical input coming from different cultures and musical backgrounds is best expressed in the many own compositions of the group members. Music is recorded, and will soon be all mixed and done, looking forward to it!
